Hi Paul! You have now played six games for Väsby. What can you say about your time with us and has it been as you imagined it to be?

-I wasn’t quite sure what to expect coming to Europe/Sweden to play hockey. It’s been fun for sure! The guys on the team have been awesome to get to know and learn the culture here.

What do you think is the biggest difference between AHL and Hockeyallsvenskan besides the bigger rink in Sweden?

-The biggest difference to me is it’s a lot more skill involved rather than wearing down the other team with physicality. Momentum within the game is extremely huge and has to be taken advantage of throughout the game.

What do you think is the biggest difference between hockey in the USA compared to Sweden?

-I’m not really sure how the local, regional, and national play within youth and HS aged kids here are. But in the states by the age of 16 I knew almost all of the best kids in my age group. We have regional, and national stage events where they bring all the best kids to compete for a week once a year. When I was younger we called those national camps. Which were a lot of fun to attend and a huge honor to be selected through regional, state wide tryouts and progression of elimination to advance and be invited. I’m not quite sure if they do that here.

You have now played two games with your north American fellows Lavoie and Smith and I think that you have played very good together. Is it easier to play with them because you perhaps play and think hockey more similar?

-I have enjoyed playing with all my teammates. I think there is a lot of similarities in the way we play (Colin Smith, Raphael Lavoie) because we grew up playing the NA style of play. We can read off each other well, and know where we want to go with the pucks. I enjoy playing with my European teammates as well and learning off them and how they grew up playing on the big sheet and seeing the ways they create offense. And defend being that the bigger ice there’s a lot more ground to cover.

Last Friday we lost to Tingsryd and once again we conceived the first goals and had to chase for the equalizer. What can we do better in the beginning of the games do you think?

-There’s a lot the goes into games and preparing the right way for them. Personally I need to be better defensively. Reading plays and knowing who to pick up off the rush, and or dzone coverage. I think as a team we all could do a better job at that. I also believe we need to have more urgency within our game. We had a lot of puck possession in zone against Tingsryd, and need to attack the middle ice in the ozone.

Our penalties are very costly right now and many of those we take in the offensive zone. How can we correct that and be a little more chill but still not affect our aggressivity?

-For me the penalties are called much tighter than they would be back in NA. I’ve gotten two penalties and reviewed by or talked about by refs after the fact because someone was quote on quote “hurt” 🥴 which personally is ridiculous. I think how we create offense we need to stay aggressive and hungry in our play. I also feel same things happen to us and haven’t been called. I don’t think we should change our game just because we’ve had a few penalties go against us, because we have seen success through our aggressive style.

We will now face Mora again after our two losses a few weeks ago. How should we play to be able to rematch them?

-I know I’m looking forward to this match, as are the boys! We felt we were taking it to them in the first match in Mora, but ultimately losing control of the game and letting them back into and blowing us out at the end. We have a lot of fire and know what to expect from them and they do us. Should be a real good game. We want to get out on top again, but keep driving them back, and not letting our actions allow them back into the game.

Finally Paul, how will you try to lead Väsby at Wednesday and what details will be the differences in the game do you think?

-I’m going to play my game. I’ve been since moved to center with Lindberg having his injury. I provide a decent amount of speed skill and hockey sense I’ll use to get to the net, crash and bang bodies down low (hopefully not taking penalties cuz I hit somewhere a little hard) using my strength and size to my advantage.
